This story was inspired by an actual event that occurred in her family home when she was 10 years old. It was her younger sister who came home with her pictures from Kindergarten, and laid them out for Mom. Yes, the pictures did catch on fire. The families that Lara meets in the story are fictional. However, the community of White River Ontario is real. It was at one time the coldest spot in Canada. It is now remembered as the hometown of Winnie-the-Pooh. The bear cub that all of the stories were written about was purchased at the White River train station.
White River is quite a diverse community. We had neighbours from all parts of Canada, as well as Japan, Italy, and India. Both official languages of Canada: English and French are spoken in the little community.
